Kitchen Tables for Small Spaces - Shopping Guide an Tips

You might be positivley surprised by the variety of designs that you can find online to maximize the utility of your kitchen table and also require very little space. Manufactures realized a long time ago that small families and smaller homes require kitchen tables for small spaces. Furniture designed to be both functional as well as very stylish. You will be able to find a variety of designs from French Bistro, to soda shoppe themed tables that help to recreate that very sytlish 1950's retro look. It doesn't matter if your just looking for a small little wood breakfast table, a dinette, or even a sleek modern looking glass topped dinner table.

A couple of my favorite very designs that usually make great solutions for people who are  looking for kitchen tables are kitchen island tables and breakfast nook tables. If you live in a home with limited square footage, or maybe even an apartment, a kitchen table that is small, portable and that can be used as a work station or food prep area can be the perfect solution. And you don't have to give up your sense of style either.

No matter what style you choose, you want your kitchen to be a comfortable place where friends and family could enjoy sitting for a few minutes over a nice cup of coffee to catch up with each other. Or maybe the kitchen table might be the setting for an evening game of Monoply with the family – a place that encourages you to spend some time together.

So while you’re thinking about the decision you are about to make, just keep some of these ideas in the back of your mind.

Shopping Guide an Tips:

How much space?

I know it sounds basic, but some people really don't stop to think about how much space is really going to be required by that perfect set of Danish table and chairs they fell in love with. So you really do need to sit down and consider exactly how much space you have available - particularly for the chairs. It's not a bad idea to even make a quick scale drawing to see if they will fit and how traffic will flow around the table. You should begin with table dimensions and then add about two feet for each chair to provide room for maneuvering around. You will quickly notice that chairs and the space they require begin to occupy a large area. If you have a very small kitchen a bar extension or a free standing table are also soultions you might consider.  When you're shopping for kitchen tables for small spaces this really has to be your first consideration  - how much space do I have?

What shape?

You will be able to find a kitchen table in almost any shape you can image - square, rectangular, round, half-moon or even triangular. Do you need a table that can fit easily into a corner, along a wall, or perhaps even an island style standup solution in the middle of the room? It really depends on how your kitchen is laid out and the traffic flow in and out of your kitchen. A corner table works especially well in small kitchens because it helps to create more space for maneuvering around. You will also want to consider the shape of your kitchen. If your kitchen is rectangular - a rectangular or oval shaped table is usually best. If your kitchen is a square, then a square table or a circular shaped table is complementary.

Table or workspace?

The next thing you want to consider your table will be used. For some people, kitchen tables for small spaces have to perform multiple functions. For example, if all you are looking for is a table to set your cup of morning coffee on while you gaze out your kitchen window, perhaps something as simple and compact as a wall mounted table might be perfect. Does it just need to provide a quiet secluded area for that morning cup of coffee, or is it the primary area where all your meals will be eaten? Will it have to occasionally double as your office desk, or a homework center? The day to day demands of how your table will be used influences your choice.

What kind of materials?

You should start by considering the other types of materials already in your kitchen - your kitchen cabinets, counter tops, and flooring for example. If you have glass cabinet faces then a matching glass kitchen table would provide a nice complement. Or if you have a dark oak stain for example, then you may want to stay with a similar wood kitchen table.Prefer a more modern trendy look, then a take a look at a metal table or French Bistro design. Of course, you don’t have to choose between wood, metal or glass, you could combine them as many modern desings do.

Modern or traditional?

Small kitchen tables come in a variety of look, materials, designs and colors. Most modern tables are made from either metal or glass or a combination of these two materials. Of course, if you spend a little time researching online you will also be able to find tables that have a modern design and look but are made from traditional materials. Small kitchen tables in a traditonal style are typically made from wood and usually have a historic theme such as a Mission table or a retro kitchen table. You will find kitchen tables for small spaces online that reflect a wide varielty of your personal tastes - no matter how eclectic and be very functional as well.
